Give Elsa a Big Sister moment
For the record, I hope Disney gives us a scene in the Frozen sequel where Anna has some insecurities and Elsa has to step in and comfort her.
So far, we have seen Elsa struggling with her insecurities and fears in all three installments:
- Attempting to gain control over her powers in Frozen
- Trying to make up for thirteen years of missed birthdays for Anna in Frozen Fever
- Blaming herself for their lack of a family tradition in Olaf’s Frozen Adventure
In each of these cases, Elsa has an emotional issue that she carries by herself. Anna tries to help her, to show that she does not have to carry her burdens alone. In Frozen, Elsa pays dearly for pushing Anna aside and refusing to get help when she needs it. That changes in Frozen Fever when Elsa finally admits she has a cold and allows Anna to take care of her, though she still blames herself for causing trouble on her sister’s birthday. In Olaf’s Frozen Adventure (spoiler alert), Anna tries to find something that shows they have a family tradition, but Elsa stumbles across the answer from their childhood.
I have seen many people online - on Tumblr and in fan fiction - portray Elsa as an emotional train wreck because she has anxiety and constantly blames herself for mistakes from her past. While she is far from perfect, I find this view to be reading only part of her character and neglecting the rest of someone so complicated. Even worse, there is this view that Anna essentially has to act as emotional support for her big sister. I think this not only trivializes Elsa and her problems, but gives Anna an unfair burden.
Besides, it’s not like Anna emerged from the isolation unscathed. I am certain she had her moments of self-doubt and fear; she may have simply done a better job of concealing it. (Ironic, eh?) I mean, she had to be afraid of losing her sister forever. Why else would she have sacrificed herself on the fjord? And I bet she is still afraid of Elsa shutting her out again, maybe for good, or that Elsa will disappear completely. That is not shown on screen, but I’ve noticed a few people online addressing that possible fear.
What I would love to see is Anna dealing with some sort of fear (most likely that she could lose her sister for good) and Elsa recognizing it and stepping in to comfort her. It would make me so happy to see Elsa for once being the one to reassure her sister, to tell her that everything is and will be all right. I want to see Elsa on the big screen telling Anna directly how much she loves her and that she will never shut her little sister out again, or that she will always be there for her. That would show Anna is not always the happy-go-lucky princess and Elsa is truly capable of being a big sister after all.
So please Disney, give Elsa the big sister moment she deserves.
